Aim

The Sir Edward Youde Memorial Awards for Disabled Students aim at encouraging disabled local students at senior secondary, post-secondary and tertiary levels in their studies as well as enhancing the community's awareness of their achievements. The Awards will be granted by the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council in recognition of the student's individual merit and academic achievements.

Value of Awards

The award will be in the form of a one-off grant to purchase personal aids or study aids requested by the nominee and certified by the Commissioner for Rehabilitation and related professional bodies as suitable and necessary for the nominee's effective learning.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Candidates should fall into one of the following categories of disabilities :
    i.  visual impairment,
    ii.  hearing impairment, or
    iii.  physically handicapped;
  2. they should possess Hong Kong Identity Cards;
  3. they should have resided in Hong Kong for at least 5 years;
  4. they should be full-time Secondary 6 (Grade 12) or Secondary 7 (Grade 13) students at any government, aided, direct subsidy scheme, per caput grant, private or English Schools Foundation schools; or they should be full-time students undertaking UGC - funded / publicly - funded courses at any of the following tertiary/post-secondary institutions :
    i.  City University of Hong Kong,
    ii.  Hong Kong Baptist University,
    iii.  Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education,
    iv.  Hong Kong Shue Yan University,
    v.  Lingnan University,
    vi.  The Chinese University of Hong Kong,
    vii.  The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts,
    viii. The Hong Kong Institute of Education,
    ix.  The Hong Kong Polytechnic University,
    x.  The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, and
    xi.  The University of Hong Kong.
  5. they should be nominated by the heads of their institutions or school principals, on the basis of their academic performance at both internal and public examinations and genuineness of their need;
  6. they should have good personal qualities and potentials; and
  7. they should NOT have bought the requested study aid items before submission of application.

Nomination Procedure

Nominations will usually be invited in September and closed in October each year. The Council will decide on the results of the awards after consulting the Commissioner for Rehabilitation and relevant professional bodies. Only in very exceptional circumstances will an interview be held to select the winners for the award.

Announcement of Results

Awardees will be informed of the results around the following March of the same academic year through their respective institutions/schools.

Payment Arrangement

Award money will be paid after the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council has decided on the awards. This will be remitted by cheque to schools/institutions which will be requested to make disbursement to the successful candidates.

Presentation of Awards

Certificates will be awarded to award recipients at an Awards Presentation Ceremony scheduled for March/April.
