Aim

This fellowship / scholarship scheme aims at encouraging and assisting full-time disabled students pursuing postgraduate studies by research and/or undergraduate, diploma and certificate programmes at post-secondary and tertiary levels in Hong Kong.

Value of Awards

For the 2008 / 2009 academic year, the successful candidates will receive a one-off grant of $30,000 for fellowship and $20,000 for scholarship. They will not be required to relinquish scholarships or bursaries held concurrently and neither will the value be reduced in such circumstances.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates should -

  1. have the right of abode or the right to land in Hong Kong or are permitted to stay in Hong Kong without restriction;
  2. have resided in Hong Kong for at least three years;
  3. be registered full-time postgraduate research students (for fellowship nominees) undertaking UGC-funded / publicly-funded courses at one of the institutions listed below -
    i.  City University of Hong Kong;
    ii.  Hong Kong Baptist University;
    iii.  Lingnan University;
    iv.  The Chinese University of Hong Kong;
    v.  The Hong Kong Polytechnic University;
    vi.  The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; and
    vii.  The University of Hong Kong.
  4. be registered full-time students (for scholarship nominees) undertaking UGC - funded / publicly - funded courses at one of the institution listed below -
    Institution Course
    City University of Hong Kong undergraduate / diploma or above
    Hong Kong Baptist University undergraduate
    Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education diploma or above
    Hong Kong Shue Yan University undergraduate or 4-year diploma
    Lingnan University undergraduate
    The Chinese University of Hong Kong undergraduate
    The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts undergraduate / diploma or above
    The Hong Kong Institute of Education undergraduate or 3-year certificate
    The Hong Kong Polytechnic University undergraduate / diploma or above
    The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology undergraduate
    The University of Hong Kong undergraduate
  5. be nominated by the principals of their previous secondary schools (for first year students being scholarship nominees) or by the heads of their post-secondary/tertiary institutions (for second year students or above being scholarship nominees or candidates for the award of fellowship);
  6. fall under one of the following categories of disabilities :-
    i.  total blindness / severe low vision;
    ii.  profound / severe hearing impairment; or
    iii.  physically handicapped.
  7. not be in full-time employment; and
  8. not be nominated for Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarships for Undergraduate, Diploma and Certificate Students or Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowships for Postgraduate Research Students in the same year.

Nomination Procedure

The relevant institutions / schools will be invited to submit nominations in September each year. Suitable candidates will normally be invited to attend interview in November / December. Candidates who have not heard from the Council by the end of December should consider themselves not being selected.

Announcement of Results

The results of the awards will be announced around January / February. Institutions and secondary schools will be notified of the results.

Payment Arrangement

Fellowship / Scholarship monies will be remitted to institutions which will be requested to make disbursement to the award recipients.

Presentation of Awards

Certificates will be presented to the award recipients at an Awards Presentation Ceremony scheduled for March / April.
