Sir Edward Youde Memorial Visiting Professorship Scheme & Postgraduate Conference for Local Tertiary Institutions
In recognition of the need to provide more opportunities for education and cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and the global academic community, the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund has since 1995/96 sponsored eminent members of the overseas academia to conduct lectures locally and to explore the possibility of undertaking research with local tertiary institutions. Amongst the successful institutions for the Visiting Professorship Awards, one may be selected to host a Postgraduate Conference at which the Visiting Professor will be the key-note speaker. As from the 2000/01 academic year, the Fund has also sponsored its first Postgraduate Conference to provide a forum for local and non-local postgraduate students to discuss their research findings as well as to exchange views and ideas. The first Postgraduate Conference focused on the theme of Biotechnology and was organized by the Chinese University of Hong Kong in June 2001.
The Council annually invites the University Grants Council-funded tertiary institutions, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the Open University of Hong Kong in April/May to submit nomination(s) for the Visiting Professorship Awards and application for subsidy for hosting Postgraduate Conference. The assistance of the Research Grants Council is enlisted in the selection of the visiting professors. Announcement of results is at the fourth quarter of the calendar year.
The value of the Visiting Professorship Awards may go up to a maximum of HK$100,000 each and one grant for subsidizing a Postgraduate Conference, up to a maximum of HK$100,000 for at least 20 non-local participants in the 2004/05 academic year. Each non-local participant for the Postgraduate Conference will be provided with a maximum grant of up to HK$5,000. The actual amount and number of award(s) / grant(s) may vary from year to year, depending on the available income to be derived from the Fund.
Each visiting professorship should normally last for about 2 weeks between February to August of the year that follows nomination whilst the postgraduate conference should normally last for about 2 days during the visiting professorship.
